COOLIDGE, AZ – On January 22, 2020 Casa Grande Ruins will host Marshall Shore as part of its annual speaker series. The presentation will begin at noon on January 22 featuring Marshall Shore who will present a lecture titled "LGBTQ: A History in Arizona". The speaker series will continue every Wednesday at noon through March 11.
Marshall Shore is Arizona's “the Hip Historian" or "Hipstorian” who specializes in finding and sharing the most interesting bits and curiosities from our past: the semi-forgotten people, places, and events that have made us who we are today. As the official “Unofficial Arizona Historian,” Marshall uses storytelling magic, found film footage, old photographs, sound recordings, ephemera, and artifacts to bring our history to life in his entertaining and educational presentations.
Arizona’s history of the LGBTQ community begins long before Arizona was a state with the Native American belief of two-spirits, and continues on through to the seismic shift of Marriage Equality. There are some surprises along the way as we talk about artists such as Keith Haring and George Quaintance as well as the little known story of Nicolai De Raylan. Join Marshall Shore, Arizona's Hip Historian, for a look at this intriguing facet of Arizona history.
The Speaker Series is funded by the Friends of Casa Grande Ruins National Monument (http://friendsofcasagranderuins.org/) with additional support from Arizona Humanities (https://azhumanities.org/). The program begins at 12:00 pm in the Casa Grande Ruins visitor center theater at 1100 W Ruins Drive, Coolidge AZ, 85128. There is no fee for the program, and entrance to Casa Grande Ruins National Monument is free.
