Tourism to Cabrillo National Monument creates $62.5 million in Economic Benefits
Report shows visitor spending supports 564 jobs in San Diego economy
San Diego, CA – A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 684,000 visitors to Cabrillo National Monument in 2021 spent $44.5 million in San Diego communities near the park – one of many gateway communities in proximity to a national park site. That spending supported 564 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $62.5 million.
“National parks are a vital part of our nation’s economy, especially for tourism destinations such as San Diego, and California, where millions of visitors each year find places to sleep, eat, and make use of other local services that help drive a vibrant tourism and outdoor recreation industry,” said Superintendent Andrea Compton. “Cabrillo National Monument is San Diego’s only national park, and we are excited to share the stories of this place and the experiences it provides, while also bringing financial benefits to the greater San Diego area.”
“An easily accessible park for people of all abilities, Cabrillo National Monument is a place where visitors can have a National Park experience just minutes outside of a metropolitan area, and we hope visitors have positive experiences that inspire them to visit other park service sites around the country.”
The peer-reviewed visitor spending analysis was conducted by economists at the National Park Service and the U.S. Geological Survey. The report shows $20.5 billion of direct spending by more than 297 million park visitors in communities within 60 miles of a national park. This spending supported 322,600 jobs nationally; 269,900 of those jobs are found in these gateway communities. The cumulative benefit to the U.S. economy was $42.5 billion.
As for the economics of visitor spending, the lodging sector had the highest direct effects, with $7 billion in economic output nationally. The restaurants sector had the second greatest effects, with $4.2 billion in economic output nationally.
Report authors also produce an interactive tool that enables users to explore visitor spending, jobs, labor income, value added, and output effects by sector for national, state, and local economies. Users can also view year-by-year trend data. The interactive tool and report are available at the NPS Social Science Program webpage: https://www.nps.gov/subjects/socialscience/vse.htm

Cabrillo National Monument is one of over four hundred units in the National Park Service system. The park is located in San Diego, California, perched on the southern end of the Point Loma peninsula more than 400 feet above the shoreline. The park offers unparalleled panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the urban skyline and mountain ranges from San Diego to Mexico. The park commemorates the voyage of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the first European to chart the West Coast of what is now the United States. The park includes the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, illuminated in 1855, and 21 military fortifications which protected San Diego harbor in World War I and World War II. The extensive rocky intertidal area along the monument’s western boundary contains one of the best-preserved and well-studied tidepool ecosystems in Southern California.
