No matter where you are on Earth, you’re standing in a watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a common body, such as a river, lake, or ocean. The boundaries of a watershed are determined by the tallest features in the landscape, such as hills and mountains. Watersheds play a crucial role in the hydrologic cycle, supplying the water we rely on for drinking, farming, industry, and healthy ecosystems. In San Diego County, our eleven westward draining watersheds flow toward the Pacific Ocean, carrying everything they collect along the way.
