People have lived in the vicinity of the Big Thicket for thousands of years, yet often very little physical evidence of their lives remains here. The lush vegetation quickly overgrows sites that aren't constantly maintained.
Several local museums do an excellent job of commemorating the history and preserving the legacy of the people and the industries that helped to shape this area:
Museum of Hardin County, 830 Maple Str, Kountze
Ice House Museum, 818 Earnest Ave, Silsbee
Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum, 5550 Jimmy Simmons Blvd, Beaumont
Museum of the Gulf Coast, 700 Procter Str, Port Arthur
