July Programs at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

Bighorn Canyon rangers and volunteers offer a variety of programs for all ages.

Lovell, WY — Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is excited to share a variety of programs in July.

Artist In Residence

The 2026 Artist in Residence will be in the park in the month of July. Wisconsin-based photographer Kathryn Des Forge, who brings 18 years of landscape and wildlife photography, will kick the month off. Kathryn will be presenting “How to Take Better Wildflower Photos with Your Phone” on Saturday July 11th at the Lovell Bighorn Canyon Visitor Center at 10 AM. The program will start in the Auditorium with hands on demonstrations to follow in the native gardens around the visitor center.

Water Based Programs

July 18 Join Club Dauntless and Bighorn Canyon for a guided kayak tour. These excursions will be offered free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis for up to 10 participants. Up to 5 participants with their own equipment are welcome to join for a total of 15. All participants must call ahead and register with Club Dauntless. Registration will open one week before the event. All trips are subject to cancellation at the guide’s discretion. Registered participants will be informed if there is a cancellation. Meet at Barry’s landing at 10:30. Participants will paddle north to chain canyon. The program will cover proper paddling techniques, and general safety precautions. Participants will learn more about the infamous chain canyon before returning to the boat ramp. Participants should bring water, snacks, sunscreen, water shoes, and appropriate weather clothing.

July 24 Join Ranger Jenna at the Visitor Center Fishing Pond from 9 to noon. This is a great time for people new to fishing to gain some skills with the help of park staff and volunteers. Don't have any equipment? No worries. There will be a limited supply of fishing equipment provided. All you need to bring is your Wyoming fishing license (required), snacks and water, and sun protection.

Ranch Tours

July 11 Join Volunteers Mike Bridgeman and Steve Kenney for guided tours of Hillsboro, MT. Tours will start at 11 AM and go until 2 PM, weather dependent.
