Contact: David Elkowitz, 432-477-1108 The management of Big Bend National Park is initiating temporary closures of the following park areas: Cottonwood Campground car and group campsites;all but the first loop of the Rio Grande Village Campground;all Rio Grande Village group campsites;and the Old Maverick Road backcountry car camping sites. The closures will begin June 1st and will be progressively lifted beginning October 1st with all facilities to be re-opened by November 1st. The closures are due to short-term staffing shortages and are for visitor and employee safety, as well as park resource protection.
The majority of the park's facilities, trails, restaurant, lodging, camping stores, RV Park, and all of the Chisos Basin campsites remain open to the public for normal use. Alternative areas are available for every type of camping and activity that is temporarily closed within the park. Closed areas as listed above are within the warmest and least used park areas during the summer months.
Big Bend National Park's employees strive to provide the very best visitor experience, to protect the park's resources, and to provide access to the park's recreational, cultural, and natural resources. Visitors are encouraged to call the park if they have questions about the status of any park facility or area.
