The Rio Grande Village Campground will remain open through Memorial Day weekend. This 100-site campground was expected to be closed in order for work to begin on replacing a water tank and waste water lagoon liners. The park just learned that the contractor would need an extra week in order to begin work. The new dates for the campground closure will be May 30 - September 1.

“This is one of those good news - bad news situations,” said Acting Superintendent David Larson. “Although it’s regrettable that this important project is not going to start when planned, we’ll have more campsites available to Big Bend visitors during a very busy Memorial Day weekend.”

The park encourages visitors to be flexible with their plans for the weekend. Campgrounds and backcountry sites will likely fill to capacity by early afternoon throughout the weekend. Visitors may encounter full parking lots at trailheads and in the Chisos Basin at times. Additional camping is available west of the park in the Terlingua - Study Butte area and at Stillwell’s Ranch and RV Park, north of the park.
