Campground Closure Extended at Big Bend National Park

Big Bend National Park is conducting deferred maintenance projects in Rio Grande Village. The park is replacing a water tank and waste water lagoon liners at Rio Grande Village, which affects water availability and sewage treatment. Due to delays, the Rio Grande Village campground, RV full-hook up sites, as well as showers and laundry facilities at the Rio Grande Village Camp Store may have partial or temporary closures through October 31st.

Visitors will still be able to visit the area including Boquillas Canyon, the Port of Entry, and Hot Springs. Pedestrian access to the Rio Grande Village Nature Trail will be available as well, but visitors are cautioned to watch for equipment on the roadways. The Chisos Basin and Cottonwood campgrounds remain open.

The park reminds visitors that shower facilities and additional camping sites are available outside the park at Stillwell’s Ranch and RV park north of the park, and within Terlingua and Study Butte just west of the park. VisitBigBend.com provides additional information on these facilities.

These two projects will help in reducing the $91 million dollars of deferred maintenance projects at Big Bend National Park, and will directly benefit visitors by maintaining safe drinking water and waste disposal for the future. Acting Superintendent David Larson says, “We appreciate the patience and understanding of our visitors as we seek to provide better and more sustainable facilities for the future generations to come.”
