Big Bend National Park is temporarily closing the popular Lost Mine Trail area due to increased bear activity. Hike-in designated campsites at Laguna Meadow, also in the park's Chisos Mountains, are closed to overnight use as well.
The closures begin the evening of October 14, and continue until further notice.
Alternative areas for hiking and camping in the Chisos Mountains and throughout the park remain open to public use.
The Chisos Mountains is home to a healthy bear population, and good rains have resulted in localities with abundant pine and oak nut production. Bears feed heavily during the fall to prepare for their winter denning period.
According to Superintendent Cindy Ott-Jones, "During this period of heightened beard activity, we want to ensure the safety of both park visitors and the bears."
