Appomattox Court House NHP Completes Rehabilitation of Peers’ House
Appomattox, Va. – The preservation maintenance staff of Appomattox Court House National Historical Park recently completed repairs and rehabilitation of the Peers house, a historic structure located off of the Richmond – Lynchburg Stage Road. Built in 1855, this structure was inhabited by George Peers, clerk of court for Appomattox County at the time of Lee’s surrender on April 9, 1865. Confederate cannoneers fired some of the last artillery rounds from the Peers' yard. Union General Joshua Chamberlain had dinner in the house with George Peers on the evening of April 11, 1865, and made his headquarters outside the house.
The historic buildings that comprise the village of Appomattox Court House received multiple repairs and rehabilitation work leading up to the Sesquicentennial events in 2015 thanks to a combination of internal and external contractors, preservation specialists and park maintenance staff. The Peers’ House sits prominently east of the courthouse, and was among the last of the key structures to receive upgrades, all completely done in-house by the park’s maintenance team. Specifically, park staff replaced the siding, repaired windows and porches, and painted the historic structures reducing more than $100,000 in deferred maintenance costs for the park.
John Spangler, Chief of Facilities for the park, shared his thoughts on the completed preservation work. “Seeing the results of our maintenance staff’s hard work, makes me realize how important it is to have skilled people working on these buildings. Through the act of preservation these structures stand the test of time, proudly remain, and perpetually tell an American story.”
