Help Clean Cemetery Headstones for Veterans at Andersonville National Cemetery for National Public Lands Day.
ANDERSONVILLE, Georgia – On Saturday, September 24, 2022, Andersonville National Historic Site will be taking part in National Public Lands Day (NPLD), the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event on public lands. This event is held annually on the fourth Saturday of September. Volunteers play a vital role in the preservation and protection of our nation’s history and it’s treasured natural and cultural resources.
Andersonville NHS will be hosting an event on September 24:
- 9:30am- Volunteers arrive at the National Cemetery flagpole in order to register and receive safety brief
- 9:45 am- 12 noon: Volunteers and park staff will clean headstones throughout the cemetery. e-mail us Volunteers are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes and sunscreen as well as bring water, sunscreen, and gloves to help park staff honor the memory of these men and women who served our country. In recognition of their service, all who participate in this event will receive a fee free coupon which will allow them a “fee-free” day at any participating federal recreation site with the next calendar year. Andersonville National Historic Site is located 10 miles south of Oglethorpe, GA and 10 miles northeast of Americus, GA on Georgia Highway 49. The national park features the National Prisoner of War Museum, Andersonville National Cemetery and the site of the historic Civil War prison, Camp Sumter. Andersonville National Historic Site is the only national park within the National Park System to serve as a memorial to all American prisoners of war. Park grounds are open from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The National Prisoner of War Museum is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., daily. Admission is free.
