Gia Wagner Named Superintendent of
Andersonville National Historic Site
ATLANTA – Today, National Park Service (NPS) South Atlantic-Gulf Acting Regional Director Karen Cucurullo announced the selection of Gia Wagner as the new superintendent of Andersonville National Historic Site, located in Andersonville, Ga. Wagner will begin her new assignment July 19.
“Gia is an exceptional leader and has extensive experience in managing complex operations,” said Cucurullo. “She is well suited for the significant role Andersonville National Historic Site plays in telling the story of our fallen heroes and all American POWs.”
Prior to joining Andersonville National Historic site, Wagner was the NPS natural resources branch chief in the Midwest where she led the formation of strong partnerships with local land managers, non-profits, and state governments in order to fund millions of dollars of natural resource restoration. Over the course of her career, Wagner worked as a biologist for Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, served as a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance specialist for Cuyahoga National Park and Buffalo River National Park and worked closely with the Midwest Regional Office and others in establishing the Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Program. As resources management and maintenance chief at Missouri National Recreational River, she worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers to manage Wild and Scenic River regulations and land acquisitions. Wagner has advanced the resource knowledge and management of the NPS by assisting numerous parks and programs with NEPA compliance, inventory and monitoring, and helped develop the Natural Resource Academy eLearning courses. She is an active mentor to many college students and has been an NPS Equal Employment Opportunity Counselor for over 15 years.

Honoring the sacrifices and experiences of our nation’s veterans and prisoners of war is vital to our country and the fabric of our society. I look forward to working with staff, volunteers and partners to ensure the continued preservation and communication of our nation’s history; preserving and communicating the stories of American prisoners of war and honoring the sacrifices of all veterans as we care for the National Cemetery,” said Wagner.
Wagner holds a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in environmental biology from Governor’s State University in Illinois. She looks forward to exploring the state of Georgia with her family.

About Andersonville National Historic Site:
Located in rural Georgia, this park protects the original site of the Civil War prisoner of war camp used from 1864 through 1865. The site includes the National Prisoner of War Museum, which is dedicated to the stories of all American POWs, and Andersonville National Cemetery. The cemetery began as the burial grounds for almost 13,000 Union POWs, but continues as an active national cemetery. There are over 21,000 interments of soldiers and dependents within the cemetery to date. The site was authorized Oct. 16, 1970. Acreage—515.61 Federal: 500.88 Nonfederal: 14.73.
