FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: American Memorial Park Celebrates NPS Centennial AccomplishmentsAs the National Park Service embarks on its second century of service, American Memorial Park is celebrating the significant accomplishments of its centennial celebration and engagement with the Find Your Park / Encuentra Tu Parque initiative. Throughout the year, American Memorial Park has held several activities highlighting the Centennial celebration. Fourth graders visited the park through the Every Kid in a Park program. Find Your Park provided busses and guided tours to ninth graders. The first Soldier Skills summer program facilitated interactive learning and fun for Saipan youth during their vacation. World Peace Day activities highlighted the peace that came after WWII and culminated in the folding of 1000 paper cranes by students and community members that were sent to the Children’s Peace Memorial in Hiroshima, Japan. The Centennial at American Memorial Park also saw the first Day of Service. In partnership with the office of Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan, volunteers from American Red Cross, and the CNMI Public School System AmeriCorps program volunteers, over 300 members of the public assisted with a variety of park projects. This year of celebration was also one of recovery at the park. Throughout 2016 the park, with the assistance of partners such as the Saipan Mayor’s Office and community volunteers all worked together to clean up the park damage brought on by Typhoon Soudelor. Contractors made several major repairs with additional contracted repair work that will begin soon. American Memorial Park Programs Contributed to Overall Success of the NPS Centennial Across the country, centennial programs resulted in a significant level of public interest and social media engagement with the National Park Service and National Park Foundation. The NPS, NPF, and partners nationwide reached hundreds of millions of people with the centennial’s Find Your Park message, and engaged the public in the NPS Stewardship mission. Looking Ahead: Find Your Park in 2017 and Preparing for a Second Century of Service Planning is underway to build on the success of Find Your Park / Encuentra Tu Parque as the National Park Service, the National Park Foundation, and other partners will continue the campaign’s momentum in 2017. At American Memorial Park, working closely with partner Pacific Historic Parks, 2017 promises to be an exciting and busy year. This will be the second year of the Every Kid in a Park program. Through this program all Saipan 4th graders get a classroom visit from a ranger, a fieldtrip, and guided tour through the Park’s Visitor Center and Memorials. This is also the first year that all participants in the program will become Centennial Junior Rangers.
