This weekend, Agate Fossil Beds National Monument brings back the cultural demonstrator program after a 3-year hiatus. Jina Powless-Red Nest will be the first guest of honor to get the program re-started. She will demonstrate and sell her artwork from 9am-5pm Friday – Sunday, August 18-20th.

Jina started beading when she was a young girl watching her maternal grandmother sew clothes and star quilts. As a teenager, she beaded earrings, keychains, and little medallion rosettes. It was her paternal grandmother who mentored her on making moccasins and repairing other people’s beadwork. She prefers traditional beadwork but has also ventured into modern styles as well.

Jina is from the Oglala Lakota, Oneida, and Northern Cheyenne tribes. She and her husband are retired and live in Scotts Bluff. She says, while retired, “I continue to bead and sew and keep up with my grands!”

Jina’s table will be located inside the air-conditioned visitor center at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument. The rangers invite you to beat the heat this weekend by watching Jina do her craft and purchasing items directly from her. All sales made by the cultural demonstrators go directly to them.

We hope you can join us in welcoming back the cultural demonstrator program. For more information, please contact the park at (308) 665-4113 or e-mail us. No registration is needed. ASL interpreter available on Friday and Saturday.
