Contact: Leslie Courtright, 435-772-0166 Contact: Ron Terry, 435-772-0160 Superintendent Jock Whitworth has announced an exhibition of seven landscape paintings titled Jim Jones: Recent Paintings of Zion National Park. The paintings, completed by Jim Jones in the last years of his life, will be on display at the park's Human History Museum until April 5, 2010. The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The seven landscape paintings are part of a larger collection of 14 paintings donated to Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah as part of the legacy Jones wished to leave behind. Jones (February 21, 1933-December 5, 2009) grew up in Cedar City and studied art at the Art Center of Los Angeles. Later, he traveled to Mexico to study portrait and figure painting. Jones made his way back to Rockville, Utah and built his home at the mouth of Zion Canyon. Over his 33 year career as an artist, Jones created over 1,400 paintings. Michael Benson, President of Southern Utah University, said, “Simply put, he is a state, regional, and national treasure.” |
