April 21, 2016 Posted by: Zion National Park

On September 29, 2015 around 2:00pm Zion Dispatch received multiple reports from Park Visitors exiting the Virgin River Narrows about a 62 year old male with a knee injury. The patient was hiking the Narrows when he slipped and fell. He was requesting NPS assistance and was unable to walk. A SAR Team of 10 traveled up the riverside walk and into the Narrows with a floating litter along with other medical supplies. The SAR team made contact with the patient and his wife approximately 1/4 mile below Big Spring. The patient was treated by two EMT personnel and stabilized with bilateral leg splints. The SAR team carefully navigated the Narrows and floated the patient to the end of the Riverside walk. At 10:00pm, when the SAR team arrived at the trailhead, the patient was transported to the regional medical center for definitive care.
