Park to Expand Working with the U.S. Public Health Service

Yosemite National Park Superintendent Don Neubacher announced that National Park Service (NPS) staff assigned from the United States Public Health Service (PHS) will provide the future clinical care at the Yosemite Medical Clinic, effective, January 1, 2011. The contract for the current provider, Tenet Healthcare Corporation, expires on December 31, 2010.

The Clinic, located in Yosemite Valley, treats about 7,000 patients per year. Visitors to the park seek treatment for injuries sustained in the park, which includes sprained ankles, complex fractures, heart attacks, and a multitude of other injuries and illnesses. Additionally, park employees utilize the Clinic as a primary care facility. The Clinic currently provides occupational health, a pharmacy, and other health related services.

The United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps employs more than 6,000 public health professionals throughout the country. As one of the United States seven uniformed services, the PHS draws officers from many professions including medicine, nursing, hospital administration, occupational health, and nutrition. They currently provide care in medical clinics on Indian Reservations and in rural communities throughout the country.

The park will transition from Tenet Healthcare to the new providers over the next two months. It is expected that clinical staff from the PHS will be on duty effective January 1, 2011. However, other clinic services, such as a pharmacy and occupational health, will be phased in after the beginning of the new year. Yosemite National Park and the United States Public Health Service are currently working on expanding their existing agreement to delineate the specifics of staffing and services at the Yosemite Medical Clinic.
