Allowed Bear-Resistant Food Storage Containers

Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC) approved hard sided backpacking & small storage containers, panniers / boxes, and coolers may be used for food storage when camping in Yellowstone's backcountry, but they are not approved for food storage in frontcountry campgrounds. These containers must be properly secured, latched, and / or locked and left on the ground at the base of the food pole or at the cooking area when a food pole is not present. Any food, trash, and bear attractant that does not fit into the container must be secured by hanging or stored in an NPS installed bear proof locker.

Canisters, panniers, and coolers below have undergone testing by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee (IGBC). These containers may be disallowed at any time due to failures in the field. Yellowstone allows only the use of hard sided containers approved by the IGBC under the categories of backpacking & small storage containers, panniers / boxes, and coolers. Containers that are not listed on IGBC’s Certified Bear Resistant Product list are not allowed for food storage in Yellowstone.
