INTERANTIONAL FALLS, MN: Voyageurs National Park staff partnered with the Rainy Lake Sportfishing Club and Voyageurs Conservancy to design and build a fishing pier at the Rainy Lake Visitor Center picnic grounds. Measuring 40-feet long with a standard 10-feet “T” at the end, the pier meets ADA requirements and is accessible to all. Interpretive waysides tell the Ojibwe peoples story of life on the lake and a volunteer program created monofilament line recycling containers. “This pier is an important and integral recreation area for the community of International Falls, Ranier, and the visiting public,” commented Superintendent Bob DeGross. On July 31, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm join the Rainy Lake Sportsfishing Club, Voyageurs National Park, Voyageurs Conservancy, and National Park Conservation Association and celebrate the opening of the Rainy Lake Fishing Pier. A food truck will be available to purchase a picnic lunch while enjoying the gorgeous view of Rainy Lake. This event is free to the public and includes fishing programs for new and young anglers (poles will be provided), yoga on the lawn, and interactive education stations. Park Rangers will invite kids to become Junior Anglers and learn how to be stewards of local waterways, while the park's aquatics team will help you keep aquatic invasive species like zebra mussels and spiny water fleas out of Voyageurs' lakes. Learn about the park's outstanding waters, cast a line, and enjoy a relaxing day on the pier. More details to come at www.voyageurs.org/events
