It is that time of the year when children look forward to the end of the school year. Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River wants to keep the love of learning and reading alive and well during the summer months. To that end the programs “River Readings” and “Backyard Biology” will again be offered this summer. Through stories and crafts the “River Readings” program will allow children to learn about the Delaware River and the many animals, insects, plants, and trees that can be found along the shores of this beautiful river. “This is an exciting way for children to explore the natural resources of the Upper Delaware River” said Superintendent Vidal Martinez “Our young children will be the stewards of the river tomorrow.”

The wonder of the Upper Delaware Valley often captures the curiosity of young residents and visitors. The program “Backyard Biology” seeks to develop their interests even further and act as a catalyst for life-long learning. During the course of seven weeks participants will learn about many of the key scientific principles behind what lives and grows in their own backyards. Children will utilize the scientific method to investigate the world around them. Rangers will guide the participants through experiments relating to plant development, density, and the food web. The program will also include art projects and games relating to fish and wildlife. Superintendent Vidal Martinez comments on his support on Science education “Our park has a unique opportunity to encourage children to appreciate and understand their environment through science.”

“River Reading” will be every Thursday at 10:30am beginning July 2rd and will run through August 13th. Come enjoy the shade of the maple trees at the Zane Grey Museum in Lackaxen, PA while listening and learning about the natural world around us. This program is geared to children in pre-school through first grade and is limited to 20 children.

Beginning on Wednesday, July 1st at 10:30am “Backyard Biology will run through August 12th. This program is designed for children ages 7 to 12 and is limited to 25 children. It will also be held in the backyard of the Zane Grey Museum. The hour long program will meet for seven weeks.
