CLARKDALE, Ariz. – The Tuzigoot Fire, located within Tuzigoot National Monument is approximately 100 acres in size. The fire began the evening of April 2 and is being closely monitored as high winds are expected today. Tuzigoot National Monument and all trail access leading into Tavasci Marsh are closed to the public until further notice.Located in the Tavasci Marsh Area, the Tuzigoot Fire is burning through marsh and grassland areas. Fire managers plan to continue the strategy of confinement and containment while providing for point protection of identified sensitive natural and cultural resources.
Smoke may be visible in the communities of Clarkdale and Cottonwood. Tuzigoot National Monument is receiving interagency support from two Type Two suppression modules and local resources from Verde Valley Fire. Other resources assigned to the fire are six engines and a medic team.
Each fire start is evaluated by fire management officials for the most appropriate management strategy. Firefighter safety, resources at risk, location of the fire, available resources, regional and national preparedness levels, and weather forecast are taken into consideration when responding to a wildfire ignition.
