Tuzigoot National Monument Gives Update on Tavasci Marsh Fire

Clarkdale, AZ — On April 2, 2023, Tuzigoot National Monument was impacted by the Tuzigoot Fire, burning approximately 106 acres, mostly in Tavasci Marsh footprint. Since that date, Tavasci Marsh has been closed to the public for safety reasons. While the cause of the fire is still being investigated by Law Enforcement and due to human safety risks of hazardous trees along the trails, the marsh closure remains in effect until all hazardous trees can be removed and erosion control can be completed. To date, Tuzigoot National Monument has completed environmental and cultural compliance to execute hazard tree work with some of the tree removal tentatively scheduled for mid-January 2024. While a final date to reopen the marsh has not been set, once mitigations are completed to the extent that areas are deemed safe, the park will announce a re-open date for Tavasci Marsh and it’s trails to visitors.
