Carol Martin

Carol Martin’s love of the Southwest likely began during her time in Tucson, Arizona, where she earned her master’s degree in anthropology. Carol was a ranger through and through, working at many parks during her career, including Grand Tetons, Carlsbad Caverns, Glen Canyon, and Tuzigoot.

Carol became the first female superintendent of Tuzigoot National Monument in 1971, andserved in this position until 1974. Considering that the first female NPS superintendent was appointed not too long before, in 1950, this was an especially noteworthy accomplishment for Carol. In 1975, she became the supervisor of the Western Archeological Center, where she worked until her retirement. As you walk around the trails at Tuzigoot, remember to thank people like Carol, who helped protect our monuments for the future.
