Presidios

This historic map of Terrenate shows the strategic position of the presidio there.

The Spanish established military garrisons or Presidios throughout the Pimería Alta to preserve civil order and protect against indian attacks. Early maps from 1767 are available for the following Presidios:

• San Felipe y Santiago de Janos
• San Felipe de Gracia Real de Terrenate
• San Ignacio de Tubac
