A very special milestone has been reached at Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site. According to Site Manager Deanna Mitchell, beginning April 2, 2011, exhibit contractors Pacific Studios will begin preparing Hangar 2, the Control Tower, and the Skyway Club for exhibit installation. It has been a long two years of exhibit planning and design and now we are "rounding the stretch" as we get closer to full restoration of Moton Field.

The following is a tentative and brief timeline of what will be transpiring:

- March 28 - Contractors from Pacific Studios arrive.

- March 29 - Work begins in Hangar 2 to prepare for installation of the P-51 Mustang and floor layouts are determined for the Pod Stations

- April 2 or 3 - P-51 Mustang arrives and installation begins (will take roughly 10 days)

- April 2 thru 30 - Framing and drywall work for all the Pod Stations will take place

- April 6 thru 10 - All furnishings for Skyway Club will arrive and will be installed.

- TBD - The actual exhibits with images and text are still being worked and will be installed at a later date.

Joyce Morris, Exhibit Planner for the National Park Service's Harper's Ferry Center, and person responsible for executing the contract for this project, will arrive on April 4. The entire installation process, to include the actual exhibits, should be completed by August 31, 2012.

Since there will be heavy lifting and construction going on inside the hangar, it will be deemed a hard hat area. Only necessary staff will be allowed in the hangar during the process. Safety First!  The public will not be allowed to enter the hangar during the installation of the exhibits.

Also, this week Dads Enterprises of Tuskegee has completed installation of 22 wayside exhibits throughout historic Moton Field and they look great! If you have a moment, feel free to make your way over to the site and enjoy a leisurely wayside exhibit stroll.  For more information, contact Deanna Mitchell, 334-724-0922.
