Missouri Research

Greene and Christian Counties

The main (northern) land route of the Trail of Tears passes directly through the Springfield, Missouri area, where Missouri State University is located. In 2006, the university’s Center for Archeological Research signed a Challenge Cost Share Program agreement to: (1) use U.S. General Land Office maps to locate and verify the location of the Trail of Tears right-of-way for various section line points in the Springfield area, (2) underwrite archeological work and a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) study at Bell Tavern, a Trail of Tears camp, and (3) display specific project results on a series of interpretive exhibit panels. Report: Archeology, History, and Geoscience of Trail of Tears Sites in Greene and Christian Counties, Missouri, Holly Jones, May 2008.
