MEDORA, ND: Through late summer and into the fall Theodore Roosevelt National Park will be conducting prescribed burns in both the North and South Units. These burns will only occur when conditions such as humidity, wind and temperature are conducive to prescribed fire operations.
Prescription in the North Unit will concentrate on 800 acres in the northwest corner and 600 acres near the Bison corral. A South Unit burn of approximately 1,200 acres will be conducted along the southeast corner of the park across from Fryburg Road.
Prescribed burns help clear invasive vegetation and promote native prairie restoration. The busy wildfire season last year started multiple fires in coal seams. Prescribed burns can help prevent the spread of coal seam fires, reduce fuels and can create a fire break that helps slow or stop a fire.
