Volunteer Duties at Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace

Visitor Service - Skills Required:

Demonstrates strong Interpersonal skills. Has a high level of comfort speaking and dealing with the public. Is able to clearly answer questions and give directions. Has an interest in history, NYC, and the National Park Service.

Job Responsibilities: In this position the volunteer will staff one of the visitor center or front desk at the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace.

Major duties include: Welcoming visitors to the site. Answering questions about the site, other NPS sites, and NYC. Directing visitors to other NPS sites and other points of interest in NYC including cultural, historical, geographical, and recreational sites. Informing visitors of special events and functions going on at other NPS sites in NYC. Answering the telephone and booking group visits to the site. Scheduled groups are confirmed in 3 different locations: the desk calendar, reservation form, and the on-line site calendar. Supporting the Park Service staff as needed. VIP must call in advance if they are not able to arrive for their shift, so the schedule can be adjusted and other staffing provided. Other duties as assigned.

Job Responsibilities: In this position the volunteer will staff the front desk which is the visitor contact station at Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace. Welcoming visitors to site. Answering the telephone and booking reservations for groups interested in visiting the site. (Reservations are recorded in 3 places the Reservation form, Desk Calendar, and on-line calendar.) Conducting or assisting a tour of the site. Answering questions about the site and other NYC attractions when needed, directing visitors to other NYC points of interest, including cultural, historical, geographical and recreational. Assist NPS ranger in stocking Eastern National merchandise when needed. Also when short-staffed, ringing up Eastern National transactions. Volunteers must call in advance if they are unable to report for their shift. Other Duties as assigned

Special Notes:

This position requires a working knowledge of the site and certain National Park Service policies. Volunteers will receive training on these topics and site training information will be made available. A neat, clean VIP uniform must be worn while performing this position. Business casual attire is acceptable, if you are conducting tours of the site jeans or sneakers are not permitted. A VIP patch and nametag will be provided.
