On September 12, 1777, 8,500 American soldiers began build fortifications on Bemus Heights and the surrounding fields. A month later, on October 17th, over 15,000 Americans witnessed the British surrender in Saratoga (now Schuylerville), New York. On September 19, 1777, 7,500 soldiers arrived in Saratoga, New York with General John Burgoyne.
