The National Park Service (NPS) announces the selection of Kathy Faz Garcia as superintendent of Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument.

“Kathy is a proven leader, with a diverse set of work experience including serving as acting superintendent and working for the Department of the Interior,” said Deputy Regional Director Brian Carlstrom. “She has a track record of building strong, collaborative partnerships to effectively protect park resources, making her a great fit for the Salinas Pueblo Missions team.”

Faz Garcia’s first NPS job was in a student position as a community planner with the Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program (RTCA) and the Intermountain Region’s International Conservation Program. In her role, she facilitated conversations between Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park and Mexican stakeholders and partners along the U.S.-Mexico border to create a bi-national consortium. She received her first permanent assignment with RTCA, stationed at Pecos National Historical Park. She later went on to serve as the program manager of interpretation, education and visitor services at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. During her tenure at Great Sand Dunes, she also completed an assignment with the Secretary of the Interior’s Office to advance recreation and preservation initiatives in the San Luis Valley and served as the acting superintendent for Petroglyph National Monument.

“I am thrilled to work at a captivating National Monument that is rich in archeological, historical, natural, and paleontological resources,” said Faz Garcia. “I look forward to continuing to work with the staff to share this rich and complex story.”

Faz Garcia is replacing Lisa Baldwin as the superintendent at Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument employees are the caretakers of the cultural landscapes and stories at three unique structure remnants at Abó, Quarai, and Gran Quivira. In her new role, she will be working with a robust list of partner organizations, affiliated Tribes and active community groups. She began serving in her new assignment on October 12.

Kathy and her husband, Ron, are outdoor enthusiasts and look forward to exploring hiking and biking trails, and birding areas in New Mexico.
