THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- A body of an adult male was found in the parking lot of the Newton Canyon Trailhead on Kanan Dume Road in the Santa Monica Mountains on May 25. The cause of death was suspected to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The L.A. County Sheriff's Office is investigating and will make the final determination.
Information about the deceased is not available at this time. The incident was first reported by a hiker, who called 911 at approximately 5:00 p.m.
The Newton Canyon trailhead is located in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, between the cities of Malibu and Agoura Hills. The parking lot and trailhead are managed by Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, a unit of the National Park Service.
