The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area received the 2025 Excellence in Volunteerism Innovation Award for its Woolsey Fire Recovery Camera Project, a volunteer-driven initiative launched in response to the 2018 Woolsey Fire. The project, led by park scientists and educators, trained over 4,300 volunteers to deploy wildlife cameras and analyze over one million images, documenting the recovery of mammal populations across the park. The effort revealed both common and rare species, contributing valuable data for long-term ecological monitoring. Now in its sixth year, the project continues to engage the public through educational events and partnerships, highlighting the role of community science in post-fire wildlife research. https://www.nps.gov/samo/learn/news/los-angeles-national-park-wins-award-for-volunteer-efforts-to-monitor-wildlife-recovery-after-the-2018-woolsey-fire.htm

Several of the chapters were authored by National Park Service wildlife ecologist Seth Riley and are based on carnivore research done in Southern California. These chapters discuss the impact that urbanization has on mountain lions, bobcats, and coyotes in the Santa Monica Mountains region, and represent one of the most comprehensive accounts of wildlife activity in the mountains to date. https://www.nps.gov/samo/learn/news/urbancarnivores.htm

By Brett Johnson
Saturday, March 21, 2009

History “is a place where we can all gather,” filmmaker Ken Burns noted Thursday evening during an interview in an old saloon.

So, too, are our national parks, the subject of Burns’ next opus that will air this fall on PBS. Burns and about 2,000 people gathered for an outdoor “sneak preview” of his film “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea” at Paramount Ranch south of Agoura Hills. https://www.nps.gov/samo/learn/news/ventura-county-star-thousands-attend-outdoor-screening.htm
