Pima County, Ariz. (Nov. 19) – The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD) in cooperation with Pima County, will be improving the King Canyon Trailhead parking lot and access to Kinney Road. The King Canyon Trailhead is located within Tucson Mountain Park off Kinney Road across from the Arizona Desert Museum. Meridian Contracting Inc., will be temporarily closing access to the King Canyon Trailhead parking lot in order to construct the proposed improvements.

Starting Monday, November 23 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, the contractor will begin clearing and grubbing vegetation, potholing, placing caution fencing and mobilizing equipment. Work in December will involve grading and drainage in preparation of paving the parking lot. The project is expected to be completed by late January 2021.

Project improvements include reconstructing the King Canyon Trailhead parking lot area to accommodate 35 parking spaces and 2 parking spaces accommodating equestrian use. The project will also provide improved sight visibility for vehicles leaving the parking lot and accessing Kinney Road. This project is funded by the FHWA, CFLHD and Federal Lands Access Program.

Please approach the area with caution and obey all traffic control devices. An advisory speed limit reduction may be in place through the construction zone on Kinney Road.
