Plan A Field Trip

Thank you for your interest in San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park’s free educational programs for students of all ages. We look forward to sharing the sights, sounds, smells and stories of Pacific Coast maritime history with your group!


RESERVATIONS

  • Ranger-facilitated programs for K-12 classes and educational institutions are available by reservation Tuesday-Thursday, beginning at 10:30 AM.
  • Reservations must be made at least three weeks in advance and fee waivers are available for academic and research institutions.
  • All reservations will be confirmed by email.
  • The park can accommodate up to 35 students at a time.
  • Please provide the Park with advance notice of cancellations.

To make a reservation, please fill out the electronic education reservation request form at the bottom of this webpage.

ARRIVAL
Arrival locations vary based on your group’s program. Check your reservation confirmation to see where your program is located. If you’re running late, contact the Education Ranger at (415) 370-1882. Click here for a map of the Park.

Hyde Street Pier

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled program to check in at the Ticket Booth (located in the blue building at the entrance to Hyde Street Pier) and use restroom facilities.

  • A park ranger will be waiting for your group at the Ticket Booth.

  • Please present your confirmation letter at the Ticket Booth on Hyde Street Pier to confirm your reservation.

Visitor
Center

Meet inside the Visitor Center (on Jefferson and Hyde) and check in at the front desk.

Maritime Museum

Meet at the front desk in the lobby of the Maritime Museum (entrance at 900 Beach Street).


GUIDELINES AND SAFETY
During your visit, we count on teachers and chaperones to help us provide a safe and rewarding experience for all. The Park requires one chaperone for ten students unless otherwise noted in the program. Please review the Park Rules and Guidelines for group leaders, chaperones, and students.

LUNCH AND RESTROOMS

  • There are no indoor lunch facilities available. Groups are encouraged to eat lunch in Victorian Park, on the bleachers, or on the beach.
  • There are no storage facilities at the Park.
  • Restrooms are available on Hyde Street Pier, in the Visitor Center, and in the Maritime Museum.

APPROPRIATE DRESS AND FOOTWEAR

  • Weather at Hyde Street Pier varies and is often cold and windy. Dress in layers and include a warm jacket or rain gear, if appropriate.
  • Ranger-led programs are conducted rain or shine.
  • Comfortable, closed-toe shoes and sunscreen are recommended for ship tours.
  • There are no changing facilities at the Park.
  • Foot showers are located on the eastern side of the beach next to the white roundhouse.

WHAT TO BRING

  • Copy of Park Rules and Guidelines for each chaperone.

  • Pencils and clipboards for student activities.

  • Copies of handouts for curriculum-based lessons or activities you planned for your group.

  • Signed Media Release Forms for students, if requested by Park staff.

TRANSPORTATION

  • Location and map
  • San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is easily reachable by local mass transit options.
    • The Park is located within two blocks of MUNI bus stops for routes 19, 28, 30, 49 and within a ten-minute walk from the F-line streetcar.
    • The Powell-Hyde historic cable car turnaround is located in the southeast corner of San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.
  • A limited number of ADA-accessible parking spaces are located on Jefferson Street, immediately across from the entrance to Hyde Street Pier.

  • Bus dropoff is on Hyde Street between Jefferson and Beach.

ACCESSIBILITY
Accessibility accommodations such as American Sign Language interpretation or assisted listening can be requested at least two weeks in advance by contacting the Accessibility Coordinator at (415) 859-6797 or e-mail us.

FEE-BASED PROGRAMS
Daytime fee-based field trips are available through the Park’s non-profit partner San Francisco Maritime National Park Association at www.maritime.org.

Privacy Act Statement

Authority: Public Law 114-289 National Park Service Centennial Act and 54 U.S.C. 100701 Protection, interpretation, and research in System.

Purpose: To administer education programs for education audiences including but not limited to school groups, scouting groups, extracurricular groups, and home school groups.

Routine Uses: To effectively manage requests for education received by the NPS, the Education Reservation Request Form is used to collect basic education reservation information to facilitate operational aspects of scheduling groups for park education programs, including in-park education programs, ranger in classroom programs, and/or online distance learning programs.

Disclosure: Voluntary, however, failure to provide the requested information may impede the ability to grant your education reservation request.
