Heat Can Be dangerous and Cause Illness, Even When Recreating in the Rocky Mountains

Hiking and climbing at high elevations on a hot day can actually increase the risk of heat illness.

On Saturday, June 21, 2025 the high at Bear Lake (at 9,522 feet above sea level) will be 73° F. In the Kawuneeche Valley (at 8,912 feet above sea level), the high will be 78° F.

Help protect yourself from sun exposure and heat in the following ways:

  • Wear sun-protective clothing, including a hat and sunglasses
  • Pack and wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30
  • Bring a water bottle and remember to drink plenty of fluids and eat salty snacks to help keep your electrolytes up
  • Take frequent breaks and rest under shade whenever possible to help your body cool off
