UPDATED May 13,2021
In order to make improvements to Howland Hill Road during its annual closure for maintenance, the road will be CLOSED for motorized vehicles through May 28, 2021. We anticipate reopening the road by Saturday, May 29, 2021.

Crescent City, CA—In order to perform annual road maintenance and improvements in anticipation of a busy summer, the portion of scenic Howland Hill Road which winds through Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park will be closed to all vehicle traffic for two weeks beginning Sunday evening, May 9. The road will be closed weekdays, Monday through Friday, but open to vehicles on Saturday and Sunday, May 15 and 16. Work is expected to be completed for reopening by Saturday, May 22.

Road maintenance requires heavy machinery. For visitor safety and protection of natural resources, it is necessary to close this narrow gravel roadway to all public motorized vehicles while the work is being conducted. Locked gates at each end of the roadway will block access for vehicles. Visitors may enter the area on foot or bicycle, but should use caution, especially in the vicinity of equipment. Do not block gates when parking at either end of the road.

Alternative scenic drives for exploring the beautiful old-growth forests of Redwood National and State Parks include:  Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, Bald Hills Road, Hwy. 199, and Walker Road. Please stop by any Redwood National and State Parks visitor center for current conditions and to find other opportunities to enjoy your parks.
