U.S. Park Rangers at Point Reyes National Seashore arrested a suspect in connection with multiple smash and grab style auto burglaries in the park. The arrest was made after several weeks of investigation.
On Saturday November 16, at approximately 5:30 pm, a law enforcement ranger identified an adult male and a vehicle matching a description of the auto burglary suspect along Shoreline Highway, south of Olema. After further investigation, enough information was gathered to make an arrest. Assistance was provided by the Marin County Sheriff's Department.
Point Reyes National Seashore's Chief Ranger Julie Byerly said, "U.S. Park Rangers are committed to keeping visitors safe. These incidents are investigated to the fullest extent possible to apprehend suspects." This is an open investigation and Point Reyes National Seashore is working with the US Attorney's Office and Marin County District Attorney's Office along with Golden Gate National Recreation Area towards prosecution. There have been close to two dozen break-ins reported in the park in 2019.
The name of the suspect is being withheld pending formal charges of auto burglary, vandalism and the use of stolen credit cards.
Park visitors are reminded not to leave valuables in vehicles and to report suspicious activity to nearby rangers or at the visitor center.
