Embrace Citizenship - Experience America Through Your National Parks
Point Reyes Station, CA – The public is invited to witness twenty-nine candidates from sixteen countries become new American citizens at Point Reyes National Seashore on Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at 11 am. The ceremony will take place in the Bear Valley picnic area. This is one of many naturalization ceremonies taking place in national parks across the country in a partnership between the National Park Service and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The new citizens come from sixteen countries: Canada, China, Eritrea, Germany, India, Iran, Israel, Mexico, Nepal, Netherlands, the Philippines, Portugal, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
"What better place to become a citizen of the United States than in a national park," said park superintendent Cicely Muldoon. "We are honored that these candidates chose Point Reyes National Seashore to take the oath of citizenship. It's a moving ceremony, and we hope the public joins us on September 19 in welcoming these new citizens."
Michael T. Reynolds, Acting Regional Director for the National Park Service, Pacific West Region, will make the keynote address and Section Chief Joseph Hamilton, USCIS San Francisco will administer the Oath of Allegiance to America’s newest citizens.
The National Park Service and USCIS have a formal partnership to enhance citizenship ceremonies by holding them in national parks throughout the country. The agreement helps introduce new citizens to some of the nation's most significant natural resources and cultural heritage sites. These historic and picturesque sites provide an ideal backdrop for citizenship ceremonies, where new citizens can learn about and reflect on American identity and the responsibilities of citizenship.
Point Reyes National Seashore is one of over 400 units within the National Park Service. Point Reyes was established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, "to preserve a portion of the diminishing seashore of the United States that remains undeveloped."
