As a result of the October 1995 Vision Fire, Point Reyes National Seashore gained a heightened awareness of the impacts of a major uncontrolled fire. In order to educate visitors about proper fire safety, a beach fire permit system is being initiated at the park. The no-fee permits, with educational information, will be required year-round for all open beach wood fires within the Seashore boundaries.
These fire permits will be available at all park visitor centers. A permit is not required for charcoal fires in campground and picnic area grills. Also, permits are not required for contained barbecues, such as portable metal barbecues, on beach areas or in picnic areas. The permits will be valid for the period indicated but will not exceed seven days in duration. Beach fire permits will be invalid if a Red Flag Alert day is posted.
Superintendent Don Neubacher asks that "everyone work with the National Seashore to ensure the rest of the fire season is without incident. We want to do everything possible to create a fire safe park."
