Contact: Jenny Anzelmo-Sarles (NPS), 202-619-7177 Contact: Stephen Schatz (Md. DNR), 410-260-8004 PISCATAWAY, Md. – The National Park Service and Maryland Department of Natural Resources are preparing to transfer operational responsibility of Fort Washington Marina later this year, and are inviting members of the public to learn more at a public meeting at 7 p.m. on July 11. Both agencies are committed to ensuring a smooth transition and uninterrupted visitor services at Fort Washington Marina. Fort Washington Marina has been managed by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources since 1986 through a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service. In October of 2015, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources notified the National Park Service of its desire to return responsibility for Fort Washington Marina to the National Park Service when the existing agreement expires on October 4, 2016. The National Park Service appreciates the recreational value provided by Fort Washington Marina and looks forward to working with businesses, slip holders and community members to ensure that Fort Washington Marina continues to provide great visitor experiences. The National Park Service will offer temporary concession contracts to the current businesses at the marina so visitor services can continue without interruption while the National Park Service explores longer term management options. Slip holders, community members and interested public are invited to an informational meeting regarding the marina transfer at 7 p.m. on July 11, 2016 at the Accokeek Branch Library. The library is located at 15773 Livingston Rd, Accokeek, MD 20607. Fort Washington Marina is situated on National Park Service land within Piscataway Park. The park helps preserve the Mt. Vernon viewshed, and it’s location on Piscataway Creek provides access to the Potomac River. The marina consists of a single boat launch ramp and five floating docks with 200 boat slips, a fuel dock, two pump-out stations and other visitor amenities.
