PUT-IN-BAY, OHIO – Visitors will enjoy an old fashioned summer tradition on Friday, August 11, at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial when harmony is key at the 70th annual Barbershop Singers Concert at 7 pm on the back porch of the Visitor Center. “We look forward to this event every summer,” said Superintendent Barbara Fearon, “and we’re proud to be part of the history of the barbershop singers.”

About 15 harmonizing quartets will provide 2 hours of free musical entertainment to the general public. The park will provide some seating but those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket in order to accommodate the large crowd that attends each year.

Mark Barnhill, a South Bass Island resident who has participated in the event each year said the quartets plan their own selection of songs to sing and always deliver on their performances. “This event started with a man who has a cottage on Middle Bass,” Barnhill said. “His neighbor back home was part of a quartet and he asked him to come to the island and sing. The next year there were two quartets and every year it kept growing and growing.” The performers still stay on Middle Bass each year and on Saturday night, August 12, will entertain at the Middle Bass Island Town Hall at 7 pm.

Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial has a long history of celebrating peace through music. The annual Barbershop Quartet Concert is one of many musical programs hosted at the National Park.
