Petersburg National Battlefield Offers “Fit History Hike” in Recognition of National Public Lands Day

PETERSBURG, VA - On Saturday, September 24, Petersburg National Battlefield will host a “Fit History Hike” to celebrate National Public Lands Day. The 3.5-mile ranger-guided will allow participants to learn why Petersburg National Battlefield became part of the National Park Service, how the park has evolved over the years, and the people who helped create PNB. The 2.5-hour hike will begin at 10:00 am at the trailhead located at 1437 Hickory Hill Road, Petersburg, VA. Participants are encouraged to wear durable shoes, bring drinking water, snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray. Dogs are allowed by must be kept on leash.

About National Public Lands DayCreated in 2004, National Public Lands Day encourages Americans to connect with their public lands by experiencing the educational, recreational, and health benefits found within those lands. National Public Lands Day has also been one of the largest single-day volunteer events in the country. To help celebrate, the National Park Service is waiving all entrance fees on September 24. The Eastern Front Unit of Petersburg National Battlefield is the location where Union troops made their first major attacks on the City of Petersburg in mid-June 1864. It is also where the Battles of Fort Stedman and the Crater occurred. Today, visitors can learn more about the history of the site by travelling the Unit’s four mile, 7-stop tour road, and walking the self-guided historic trails. There are also ten miles of nature trails suitable for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding. The Eastern Front Unit of Petersburg National Battlefield is located at 5001 Siege Road in Petersburg.
