Did you know that 2012 marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the Bull Moose Party?
It's been 100 years since Theodore Roosevelt ran as the standard bearer of the newly-formed Progressive (or "Bull Moose") Party. He crisscrossed the nation, addressed the issues of the day, and drew huge crowds everywhere he went.
Later this year, the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in Buffalo, NY, will be highlighting this extraordinary campaign with a new exhibit called "Bull Moose on the Loose." In conjunction with the exhibit, they will be setting loose their own bull moose (don't worry, he's well-behaved, gets along great with others, and doesn't eat much!). Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site will be sending their stuffed animal friend to national park sites all across the country. Theodore Roosevelt's passion for conservation and the National Park Service is well known, and the adventurous moose wants to get his picture taken at some of the nation's most beautiful and significant landmarks; he's hoping to meet as many people as Roosevelt did back in 1912! Check out Moosevelt's adventures!
Having been created in 1906 by Theodore Roosevelt, Petrified Forest National Park will be hosting the Bull Moose sometime during his journey. We will share pictures at this page as well as on our Facebook, stamp his National Park Passport Book (how many of you do that?), and send him on his way!
July 11: Arrival
Moosevelt arrived today. We helped him unpack and started him on his junior ranger book. Tomorrow we will go out exploring at the south end of the park!
