Greasewood

Large, very green shrub in front of a Pueblo style building and cloudy sky

NPS/Hallie Larsen

Greasewood (Sarcobatus vermiculatus) is a tangle of spiny branches with distinctive fleshy leaves like little pickles. The bark is very pale. Male and female flowers are separate but found on each bush, (monoecious). Female flowers are near the base of cone-like male flowers. The winged fruit can turn pink and eventually tan.
