Tom Hilton, CC

Chuparosa (Justicia californica) is another plant perfect for hummingbirds with its tubular red flowers and sweet nectar. This is native to Arizona, southern California into northern Mexico. The flowers have a lower lip that hangs down, a spot for pollinators to land. Birds also love to eat the sweet center of the flower. The deciduous shrubs have many long stems covered with oval to triangular leaves. This is the northernmost of a genus that tends to be tropical.
