NPS Photo/Hallie Larsen

Butterfly Weed, Milkweed (Asclepias sp.) is a native perennial that is an important butterfly host and food plant. Look closely at the complex beauty of each flower as they have a unique structure. Each flower cluster turns into a pod filled with fluffy seeds. The species found in the park include (pictured left to right) Antelope-horn (Asclepias asperula), Broadleaf Milkweed (Asclepias latifolia), and Horsetail Milkweed (Asclepias subverticillata). The last is particularly liked by Monarch butterflies.
