Summer 2014 Youth Conservation Corps Jobs Available at Oregon Caves National Monument. Oregon Caves National Monument is participating in the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program again this summer. There are up to two (2) positions to be filled.
The Youth Conservation Corps is a summer employment program for young men and women, ages 15 through 18, who work and learn together by participating in conservation work on public lands. Successful candidates will earn $9.10 per hour (Oregon minimum wage). No housing is available. All participants must bring a lunch and be able to provide their own transportation to and from the Monument. Work schedules will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. each day, five days per week, except federal holidays. This eight (8) week job opportunity is offered between the dates of June 16 – August 8, 2014.
The variety of physical labor to be performed includes bending, reaching, lifting, pulling, digging, bagging, etc. and therefore, applicant must be in good physical condition. Over 75% of the job entails 1) controlling non-native species, 2) cutting and piling shrubs and small diameter trees; often on steep slopes during hot and cold weather and full sunlight conditions and 3) present safety messages in the outdoors to visitors before starting their cave tour. Other projects will include inventorying, maintaining equipment, data entry and miscellaneous clerical duties inside the park library. Must be willing to learn how to safely traverse steep slopes, cave safely, and avoid stinging insects and contracting poison oak, as well as protecting oneself from sunburn and dehydration. Prior to job offer, an oral interview by telephone will be conducted with applicant and his/her parent or guardian. This work can be challenging, yet adventurous, as well as strenuous, hot, and dirty. If regular physical activity is not already part of an applicant's lifestyle, they are strongly discouraged from applying.
Forty (40) hours of natural and cultural resource conservation education programs will be incorporated into the scheduled work period. These programs will provide information on the diversity and mandated responsibilities of all National Park Service areas and staff, and may include field trips to other parks or areas.
