Following a recent storm pattern with multiple lightning strikes across the area, an additional fire is active in Ross Lake National Recreation Area within North Cascades National Park Service Complex. The Ruby Fire, estimated at 107 acres, was detected August 9 and is located on the south side of Ruby Mountain. Park officials closed trails, camps, and cross-country zones in the Thunder, Ruby, and Panther areas of the park complex. A full list of closures can be found on the park’s Fire Closures page.
A Type 3 Incident Commander assumed command of the fire tonight and a Type 3 Team has been ordered. The Ruby Fire will be managed with a full suppression strategy. Initial attack today included aerial delivered water with four Fire Bosses, two twin engine Scoopers, and two helicopters throughout the day. Two large air tankers applied retardant on the right flank of the fire. Tomorrow crews will utilize aviation resources when available and continue to look for opportunities to suppress the fire while managing for firefighter safety.
If you see smoke or flames dial 911 or report to a park information or visitor center. Contact the Wilderness Information Center for trail information at noca_wilderness@nps.gov.
