Glen Jean, WV — Summer is almost here and it’s the perfect time to explore parks like New River Gorge National River. Stop by a park visitor center to find out how to explore the area’s rich natural and cultural history on your own outdoor adventure, or join a free guided activity.
To kick-off a safe and fun summer on the water, the National Park Service (NPS) and the US Army Corps of Engineers are once again hosting the annual Water Safety Weekend on May 26 and 27. The weekend is filled with FREE hands-on water safety activities, where anyone can learn and try techniques to protect family and friends while recreating in, on, or around waterways. Learn proper fitting and use of a PFD (personal flotation device) or life jacket, plus try your hand at things to do to stay safe while boating on rivers and lakes. These smart tips can be used on any water adventure, be that activity on a waterway or shore-based recreation like fishing and wading. All event programs will help people safely prepare for the season’s activities on rivers and lakes. Check out the event schedule at www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/water-safety-weekend.htm, and follow us on social media with #WaterSafetyWKND.

Looking for other ways to enjoy the parks? A variety of FREE guided activities are available throughout the holiday weekend and all summer long. Explore the wonders of the Bluestone National Scenic River with a riverside walk conducted every summer Saturday ($3.00 for tram ride), or try your hand in a variety of outdoor activities in Get Active in the Park programs, like yoga, stand up paddle boarding, biking, and more. See the park’s complete Guided Activity list at www.nps.gov/neri/planyourvisit/programs.htm.
