Glen Jean, WV — Discover more of Southern West Virginia’s hidden history, the stories of people and places oftentimes hidden in plain sight, at the 12th Annual Hidden History Weekend, September 25-27, 2020. Explore heritage sites, history highlight videos and exhibits, and even challenge yourself to discover more history on your own through self-guided tours during this FREE event at New River Gorge National River, the National Coal Heritage Area, Hinton Historic District, Tamarack, and the West Virginia State Parks of Babcock, Carnifex Ferry Battlefield, Hawks Nest, Pipestem Resort, and Twin Falls Resort.
This year there will be only a few in-person site programs. Extra safety measures will be practiced during field activities due to COVID-19; face masks are required and safe social distancing will be practiced. Some programs do request advanced reservations. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water for all guided hikes.
The 2020 Hidden History Photo Contest exhibit will also open this weekend. Forty-six heritage-based images will be displayed September 25 through mid-November at Tamarack and online. This contest gives amateur adult and youth photographers of West Virginia the chance to share their love of history through a camera lens. These photos show how stories are around every corner in our neighborhoods, our community’s heritage.
Whether you want to get active where history happened, take a deep dive into local stories, or discover more history through the creative arts, Hidden History Weekend is for you!
